Acts 10 is a pivotal chapter. So far, the Jewish followers of Jesus have spread the gospel to a few Gentiles. However, these Gentiles were men and women who were already following the Jewish customs. They gospel was being severely limited, because Jesus’ followers were severely limited in their understanding of what it meant to love all people.
As you read through chapter 10, what did you find interesting today?

I think it’s interesting that God told Peter, “Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.” It’s not that we’re clean in and of ourselves, which is sort of what we’re assuming if we just look at this chapter as Peter finally overcoming his ethnic prejudices. Under the Old Covenant, Peter would have been totally right to refuse to eat unclean animals, or to avoid contact with Gentiles. But now, through what Jesus did for us, we have been made clean.

Acts 10. Peter and his Jewish friends were shocked to see that all those gathered in Cornelius’s house received the gift of the Holy Spirit. Until this time Jewish believers and most of the Apostles believed that salvation came only to them. This was a major turning point in the ministry of the apostles. Can you imagine how big of a revelation this was to them. I can see the apostles dividing the land of Israel for outreach, they had it all figured out: Peter you go here, John you go there and in a short time the whole land of Israel would have been evangelized. But just when they thought they had it all covered God completely messes up their plans. Suddenly they realize Wow! this is much bigger then we thought. What do you mean Lord?, we have to go into all the world? This must have been overwhelming.
Like the apostles we also think small many times. We limit God in what he wants to do. Here we are thinking of Ekklesia reaching the city of Westland, But I know God has bigger plans. Let’s believe for the World, why not? God does.

In verse 34 Peter says, “I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism but accepts those from every nation who fear him and do what is right.” It supports what it says in the book of James chapter 2. God wants us to be more like him, and if we want to be more like him we must not show favoritism.

What I find interesting is how God prepared the heart of Peter (through the vision) prior to the Gentile men coming to the house. Without God preparing the heart of Peter, he would have never left to go and see Cornelius (no Acts 10). As we walk as disciples, know that God is preparing our hearts for what He has planned for our future. He prepares us in such a way that no “stuff”, not even the chains of culture and traditions, will hold us back from making disciples. I know this is true. I am a testimony of it.

11:18 How grateful I am that God offers salvation to all!
11:27 I know we have false prophets because I have heard them they say one thing and when that doesn’t happen they change their story. Do we have true prophets today and how will we know them? The religious Leaders of the past rejected the prophets of their day. I don’t want to do that and yet it is hard to trust when so many are lying and using God for “profit”.

Peter’s friends were shocked because although they saw it with their eyes, they still could not understand it. They were confused by God giving the Gentiles the Holy Spirit before they actually earned it.

I think God was telling Simon that since He sent Cornelius, Simon could trust him. God also meant that Simon shouldn’t think about it, he should just do it.

When people pray they don’t expect to see an angel. They just expect to hear God speak back, not actually appear.
