I think it’s interesting that Luke finds it necessary to recap, in the words of Peter, the events of chapter 10. Reaching out to Gentiles was obviously a pivotal and controversial thing, something that needed to be carefully laid out and explained to Luke’s readers. It’s sad that Peter’s critics were initially more interested in the fact that he ate with Gentiles than that Gentiles were being reached for the Gospel.
Makes me wonder what God wants us to do today that’s controversial and pivotal….

Good stuff Keith.
I find it interesting that this is a cross roads for the early believers to who they are going to spread the gospel to. They now realize that God is going to reach the Gentiles and allow them “repentance unto life”
I believe we still have “Gentiles” in our lives that we believe God cant reach and dont share the gospel with them because of this. Maybe they dont look like us, dress like us, eat like us, speak the same language or come from the same country….
Gods gift of life is for ALL and He can reach anyone and asks us to reach EVERYONE. Dont limit who your trying to reach church.
Peace
Vinnie

I believe that it is important to have our hearts and minds open to what God has to tell us thru the Holy Spirit about how we need to reach out people. It seems that sometimes that is the only way we will listen, if he makes it obvious. In this chapter we see how the Spirit tells Peter to do something without doubting, and he listens and follows the Spirit, wow that is an amazing relationship between Peter and the Spirit.

It is amazing to see how the leaders of the church in Jerusalem were obedient to the Holy Spirit. Once they realized it was the work of the Spirit they all accept it, even though it was a hard thing to swallow.

I just love seeing the church grow as quick as it did. In Acts 11:20-21 all it took was telling the greeks the good news about Jesus and a great number believed. I wonder, are we today more apt to tell people we are christian, rather than about who Jesus was/is…
Side note: As ekklesia enters into year number two I look forward in seeing how much more God intends for us to grow. I already know 2010 is going to be an amazing year.

I love how every time that he has been mentioned so far in Acts, Barnabas is encouraging others. He has been living up to his name which meant Son of Encouragement (Acts 4:36). Here in chapter 11, Barnabas is sent by the church in Jerusalem to Antioch and when he arrives we find him encouraging the new believers at Antioch to “remain true to the Lord with all their hearts.”
Imagine with me what these new believers at Antioch must have been going through. Not only were they new in their walk with Jesus, but they were the minority by far. As all of us know the start of anything is not easy. So when Barnabas comes on the scene and sees what is taking place among the new disciples he is excited. But he understands that what these new disciples need is encouragement to continue further in their walk with the Lord. His encouragement is not just a short term commitment, but rather he goes and gets Paul and spends one year with the disciples in Antioch teaching them and encouraging them.
Too many disciples of Jesus have forgotten the importance of encouragement. We get so wrapped up in our own lives that we forget about those around us.
As much as everyone of us needs a Barnabas in our life, we need to be a Barnabas for others. So who will you encourage to keep moving forward in their walk with Jesus?

Just something interesting I found – “The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch.”

Does this mean we should not judge anyone or anybody? We should not say bad things about stuff we are not certain of and even if we do know it’s true, we still should not say bad things. We should just help the person get or do better.

It’s interesting how Peter noticed how the circumcised and uncircumcised had something in common. I also like how he recalled what God said to him. His experience influenced his people in a positive way.
