I was so encouraged as I read Acts 13 to see the church praying and fasting. It gives me an even greater desire to practice the spiritual discipline of fasting when I realize that it is during my time of fasting that I am more sensitive to what the Holy Spirit is communicating.

Here we see God using different personalities and gifts. Barnabas has been shown to be kindhearted and generous; he took Saul under his wing when nobody else trusted him, and they’ve been ministering together for several years now, and it’s always been “Barnabas and Saul.”
Now they’re out on the mission field, encountering fierce opposition from a sorcerer, and Saul’s more confrontational personality causes him to step forward and challenge the sorcerer. Suddenly, it’s not “Barnabas and Saul,” it’s “Paul and Barnabas” (or even “Paul and his companions”). All of a sudden, Paul has found his niche, and he’s now the de facto leader. Just goes to show–God uses different types of people to accomplish different things in his Kingdom.

Verses 44 & 45 tell us how the Jewish people were filled with envy when they saw the whole city came to listen to Paul and Barnabas. It reminds me of the story of the prodigal son that Jesus told. Jesus was so right in describing the religious people. How about the religious Christians today? Many churches are acting just like the Synagogues of old. Lets all pray that God will make Ekklesia an oasis for the lost and that He will do the same with all the churches in Detroit so that we the body of Christ can extend His Kingdom.

I’m with you dave. I wish I could say I’ve been fasting every week since joining ekklesia, but its only been fairly recent that i have begun to take it serious. And while its still somewhat of a mystery to me, i’m noticing it more and more in the bible lately. Each time just reinforces the importance of the act and makes it that much easier and joyous.

“Therefore, my brothers and sisters, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you. Through him everyone who believes is set free from every sin, a justification you were not able to obtain under the law of Moses.”
Something we should never forget.

Freedom is something I have longed for – for a long time. I feel as though I have been captive for so long, and it feels so awful. It is the worst thing I have ever experienced. To be a prisoner of your own free will. Sin leads to death and I feel as though I have been dying for a long time.
I had to read the excerpt I posted above at least a couple times until it sank in. I invite anyone who is held captive by sin to do the same thing. Read it out loud and know that you can be set free.
Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through him.
Read it. Believe it. Do something about it.
Ask Jesus to set you free today. If you feel as though you’ve been dying. You don’t feel much anymore. You feel that something is missing from your life that is keeping you from living it to the fullest. You want to find happiness, love, and peace but had not yet found it. I can save you the trouble of looking and tell you that it can only be found in Jesus Christ.
Find Jesus and then you will find these things. The hardest thing I have had to deal with is patience. I will force myself to learn this trait because good things come to those who are patient. Be patient with the Lord and he will reward you.
God bless.

All the mishap in our lives caused by our own sins, does not allow us to fully follow God’s will for us. We are only able to do so when He opens our hearts for His will.

I learned that Barnabas and Paul were the first missionaries of the Christian church. It was awesome of them to think enough about other people to want to teach them about God.

I agree with Joshua. If you know about God, you should teach people that don,t know about Him. You could even teach people that are not your friends and people that you don’t even know about God. If you only know alittle about God, you should still teach what you know. Then you and them can learn more together. That’s what I think.
