It all boils down to this: "Be disciples. Make disciples."
We rejoice in the reality that the chief reason people were created is to glorify God by enjoying Him forever. This is the meaning of life, and nothing is more important. Obedience is crucial, but obedience without joy is worthless. Therefore, God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him. Amazingly, enjoying God is obtaining our maximum pleasure. When we enjoy God, we end up enjoying what He enjoys.
RESPONSE: We covenant to enjoy God, which is the meaning of all life, striving to enjoy Him even more today than we did yesterday.
We passionately proclaim that we were created to love people the way God loves people… the way Jesus willfully and passionately determined and continues to determine to seek after all people, not merely waiting for them to come to Him, like when He, being God, became a human being, so we could better understand and relate to Him… the way He, being God, served the needs and desires of human beings, like the time He hand-washed the disciples’ disgusting feet, and when He touched contagious, disease-infested outcasts, healing them holistically… the way He hated sin but loved sinners, like when He hung out with prostitutes, drunks, and corrupt politicians… the way He willfully suffered spiritual, emotional, and physical abuse, like when esteemed religious leaders said He was demonized, when His own family was unsupportive, when His closest friends, His disciples, all rejected Him, when people literally spat saliva in His face, when they executed Him in a torturous and agonizing style… and all the while He never retaliated with verbal or physical violence, He never once sinned, or gave anyone reason to hate Him… and in fact, He prayed that they would all be completely forgiven.
RESPONSE: We covenant to love people the way Jesus loves people, doing whatever we can to go to all people, meeting them on their levels, not sitting back in religious recliners, waiting for them to come to us.
Jesus lived, died, resurrected, and sent His Holy Spirit so that we His people would be able to live and love the truth in every aspect of our lives, until the day we die earthly deaths. God is not interested in mere religious converts, or theologies that aspire to justify living “comfortable” lifestyles contrary to God’s will. Instead, He passionately pursues and empowers radical disciples who are willing to ecstatically surrender every member of their being and existence to His teaching and to go to the ends of the earth to make known the riches of the glory of His grace, teaching others to obey everything He has commanded.
RESPONSE: We covenant to be disciples who go and make disciples.
The whole world is in desperate need of redemption and re-establishment. The only hope is Christ. By the love of Christ in us, we strive to spread the Good News, alleviate suffering, fight injustice, and overcome the cyclical effects of poverty, one day at a time.
RESPONSE: We covenant to give our lives for the needs of others, serving the world in Jesus’ Name.
